Prepositions

Prepositions are used in phrases that talk about the location of something.

There are two ways of saying "next to":

  1. accanto a

  2. di fianco a

They are exactly the same and are interchangeable:

  1. La fermata della metro è accanto al museo. (The metro stop is next to the museum.)

  2. La fermata della metro è di fianco al museo. (Same.)

When a preposition comes right before a noun with a definite article (il, la, lo, le, etc.), it becomes a preposizione articolata. This means the preposition and article combine to become one word:

  • Il supermercato è vicino alla (a + la) farmacia.
